What Is Detoxification? A Scientific Answer

As I said, the smoothie cleanse detoxifies the body.

But, what is detoxification?

Detoxification is the bodily process that involves removal of toxins.

The body doesn’t just flush out wastes and toxins, but, it breaks down the toxins, taking what it can use whole disposing of and eliminates what isn’t necessary.

So, how does the natural detoxification process work?

Your liver, colon and the kidneys are the most critical detoxification organs.

They help get rid of all the bad in your system.

Even if you are on one of the purest diets, or you are living by mouthing slices of pizza and bowls of ice cream, these organs are always working.

What is the role of the liver in detoxification?

The liver detoxifies/ neutralizes the harmful substances in the body through a series of complex chemical reactions and the involvement of enzymes.

The enzymatic reactions convert fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble compounds excreted in bile or urine, depending on the characteristics of the end product.

This detoxification process takes place in two phases.

In the first phase, the toxin enters the P-450 cytochrome system where it is reduced into smaller fragments.

The fragments enter phase two where they bind to glycine, glutathione, and sulfate.

Phase two creates new and non-toxic molecules excreted in bile, stool, or urine.

Since most chemical toxins in the body are fat-soluble, they have a higher affinity for fatty cells and liquids than the water components.

The problem is that the fat to toxin bonds are strong and the body is unable to excrete them.

Often, these toxins stay in the fat cells for decades and only released when you exercise, fast, or when stressed.

Note that, the production of free radicals takes place in phase1 above.

Unfortunately, the body is unable to detoxify free radicals at once and when in excess, the radicals cause liver damage.

The absence of antioxidants often leads to the conversion of these toxins into far dangerous substances like carcinogens.

Both phase one and two of the detoxification process can be inefficient or even overloaded, hence the recommendation of detox, the healthy way.

This is the last part of the digestive system.

You may experience some detox symptoms.

While it’s very unlikely to happen if you’ve followed the cleanse instructions to a tee, but you may face them.

What do you mean by detox symptoms?

When you detox, the body goes through a sudden release of all the toxins build up over time.

With the expulsion of toxins, there are a host of symptoms you may experience.

These are the detox symptoms.

Rest assured that it’s actually a good sign, and that the detoxification is working, and your body is working hard to get rid of the toxins.

Typically, the more poisons there are in your body to remove, the more symptoms you may face.

These symptoms include headaches, skin breakouts, irritability, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue and even brain fog.

These symptoms may happen in the first few days after you kick start your cleanse, especially if you suddenly stop taking refined sugar, caffeine, dairy or gluten.

But you can usually go around these symptoms by drinking more water.

Also, your body will get the hang of things pretty fast, so you don’t have to worry about these symptoms.

So if you experience any detox symptoms, remember that there’s nothing with the smoothies and that it’s just how our bodies work.

CHAPTER 2: How to Do the 10-Day Cleanse: An Effective Smoothie Detox Plan

A smoothie cleanse sounds fancy and all but, it could get treacherous – more like a mountain hike.

It starts easy, and you feel excited to reach the top of the mountain.

However, at the middle where the paths get thinner and harder, you want to give up, but the only thing that keeps you climbing is the feeling you will get after you conquer the mountain and post them pictures on Instagram!

Like the treacherous mountain hike, you have to prepare for your smoothie cleanse.

And you need to identify your motivation – what are you looking to gain from the cleanse?

Now that you already know the amazing benefits of the smoothie cleanse and what it can do for your body, you’re probably wondering:

  • What should I actually do on the cleanse?
  • Which recipes should I pick?
  • Which ingredients should I use?
  • Which tools should I use?
  • Which foods should I eat/avoid?
  • How can I get prepared?
  • Etc…

But, worry not! I’ve got you covered.

Here are the very well-planned steps that you need to follow through the 10-day smoothie.

Every step is in here for a reason, so please pay close attention to each step.

Let’s dive in.

Step #1: Drink Three Meal Replacement Smoothies.

This is the first, and most important component of our smoothie detox cleanse:

Replacing the three meals with three detoxifying smoothies.

There are some people who prefer to replace only two meals with two smoothies a day.

And you can TOTALLY do that.

You will still benefit from the cleanse.

However, if you’re looking for the best possible weight loss results and health benefits, I recommend that you do the full cleanse.

Why meal replacement?

When you blend the right ingredients (which I’ll show you how to do it in the next chapter), smoothies are complete meals on their own.

Drinking smoothies as meal replacements for dinner, lunch, and breakfast, with healthy snacks and water, in between, ensures you have the right amount of calories you need for the day.

Despite the name ‘green smoothie’, it has small concentrations of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and nutrients you need for a well-functioning body.

Therefore, the smoothie will keep you full on a busy day at work, and you can last from breakfast to lunch, and lunch, through to dinner, effortlessly.

Meal-replacement smoothies also rev up your metabolism.

And you won’t spend much time in the kitchen as smoothies are quick and easy to make.

Therefore, you can prepare an entire day’s worth of smoothies in one spin.

Step #2: Drink Pure Water… And Lots of It.

There are no two ways about this:

You have to drink a lot of water when on this cleanse.


First, water revs up your metabolism making it easier for weight loss.

Secondly, cells need water for optimum function.

Thirdly, with increased frequency of urination and the bowel movements, you have to drink more water to replenish what you are losing.

Fourth reason – water will keep the bowels moving removing all the excreta from the body.

Lastly, you will need to drink water to ensure that you are just having cravings and you are not particularly hungry.

So as you can see, drinking water helps a lot with the detoxification and weight loss processes.

Therefore, you should ensure that you have ideally at least eight glasses of water daily.

Pro Tip: Drink a few glasses of plain and clean water soon after you wake up to replenish what was lost at night.

Step #3: Snack… Mindfully.

You are probably wondering if you can snack on the smoothie cleanse…

And the answer is:

Yes, you can.

In fact, you should!

Because you will find that you are consuming about 1200 calories or even less when you’re drinking your three green smoothie meals.

And since you need a minimum of 1500 calories a day, you need to find foods to add calories.

This is not a starvation diet!

Snacking is essential because I believe that it is wrong to starve yourself in the name of cleansing/ weight loss.

So I suggest you eat/drink five times a day (every three to four hours) – so:

Three smoothie meals and two snacks in between them.

Drinking a smoothie or a snack every three to four hours is important for keeping your metabolism revved up.

You will desire less food, yet you still have to fuel your body with a snack or a smoothie every three to four hours.

While smoothies work well as meal replacements, and are designed to keep you full until your next meal, you may get hungry between meals.

When you do, reach for a snack.

However, you have to snack mindfully.

Mindless snacking will automatically sabotage your diet.

While healthy snacking habits will help you stick to a diet, curb cravings, keep you satisfied, and also facilitate weight loss.

Here are some healthy snacks ideas:

Celery, apples, cucumbers, carrots, and other crunchy vegetables that are appealing to you throughout the day.

You can also opt for high-protein snacks like hard-boiled eggs, unsweetened peanut butter, unsalted nuts and seeds (only a handful).

Keep in mind, that if weight loss is your goal here, you shouldn’t go overboard with the snacks.

Here are some of the foods you should absolutely NOT consume for the best results:

Refined sugars, milk, meat, liquor, cheese, beer, coffees, sodas and diet sodas, fried foods, processed foods, and refined carbs.

The refined carbs include donuts, white bread, pasta, etc.

Step #4: Drink Detox Teas (Optional, But A Really Great Addition).

Though totally optional, if you want to take your detoxification and cleansing to the next level, herbal and detox teas are your best bet.

So if you’d like to incorporate these teas into your cleanse, I recommend that you drink these as the first thing in the morning (after your glasses of water of course).


Because drinking detox teas in the morning will enhance the detoxification efforts of the liver, kidneys, and the colon, plus the smoothies.

How to Continue Losing Weight After the Cleanse Is Over

Do you remember what I told you when we were talking about what this cleanse actually is?

I said:

“It is meant to jump-start a permanent and a sustainable change in your diet”.

Here’s what I mean by that:

Even though I recommend that you get on a “10-day” smoothie cleanse, my ultimate goal is to have you on a long-term smoothie lifestyle that will help you manage your weight and kick off diseases.

But you might be wondering:

Why shouldn’t I just quit after the ten days are over? Isn’t that enough already?

Here’s the most important reason:

  • Temporary weight loss and health gains.

There is no need of taking part in a ten-day cleanse only to get back on the unhealthy eating saddle, right?

You may not like to hear this, but:

Any extreme dietary measure, including a full-smoothie cleanse, will only work in the short term.

You can lose weight, but the lost weight through a strict diet always comes back!

On the other hand, a long-term approach is healthy and sustainable, though the weight loss process slows down.

Now answer this question:

Do you really want to run back into your old days, adding back the lost weight, looking for another weight loss fad (that doesn’t work) and feeling like crap at the end of the day?

I hope that’s not you.

Now if you decided to continue losing weight and improving your overall health each and every day, here are the three changes that should be made after the ten days are over:

Firstly, you have to stop taking three smoothies daily as meal replacements, even if you feel on top of the world.

Secondly, you have to start drinking only one or two meal replacement smoothies a day.

The two smoothies a day option is generally better in terms of weight loss and health benefits.

Lastly, you have to eat one or two healthy meals for the rest of the day.

The healthy meals may consist of fish or chicken (grilled or baked), sautéed veggies, a salad, etc…

I recommend eating healthy raw, whole foods.

But, you might be wondering:

Why shouldn’t I just continue having three smoothies a day?

Well, here are the top reasons:

  • Weight loss becomes harder.

Does this sound like the exact opposite of why I encourage the smoothie cleanse?

Well, yes, that is what happens after the ten-day cleanse.


Because your daily calorie count shouldn’t go below 1500, but if you have to, it shouldn’t be done for more than ten days.

In our case, when on smoothie cleanse, you are drinking a smoothie which is high in water, fiber, and nutrients.

However, the smoothie is low in calories with a 32-ounce smoothie containing between 300 and 400 calories.

If you’re taking the smoothie as a replacement for one or two meals that is fine, as you can have higher calorie meals later to reach your daily calorie needs.

But when using the smoothie as a replacement for three meals, for a longer period than ten days, you are calling for trouble.

So taking in less than 1500 calories a day for a longer period of time (usually ten days) results in:

1. Facing extreme hunger which you’ll unwillingly resolve through binge eating.

2. Starvation mode induced by the cleanse lasting more than ten days, your metabolism will slow down, and weight loss will stall.

Once you end the diet, the body will work hard to store more fats.

3. You will lose muscle yet you need muscles to lose weight.

  • Nutritional deficiencies.

The second reason you shouldn’t continue with the three smoothies a day option is nutritional deficiencies.

Though nutrient-dense, a green smoothie doesn’t provide ALL the nutrients you need to lead a healthy lifestyle.

You can’t find vitamin D and B12 in green smoothies, and it is low in iron, zinc, and calcium.

For example:

Your beloved spinach only gives you 4 percent RDA, while dandelion and kale give 10 and 5 percent of the RDA for calcium and iron.

You also suffer from iron deficiency on a smoothie cleanse, not to mention a big protein deficiency.

Lysine and methionine will fall below the recommended levels.

These amino acids are crucial in the body.

Lysine is necessary for muscle buildup and tissue repair (an important component of enzymes, hormones, and antibodies).

Methionine is necessary for the supply of sulfur and other elements necessary for growth and metabolism.

Did you know that low-protein diets cause a foggy head, fatigue, low energy levels and the failure to thrive, just like the high-protein diets?

The bottom line?

Consuming nothing but three green smoothie meals every day for a long period of time leaves you with nutritional deficiencies which could even send you to the hospital.

So with these drawbacks associated with prolonging the smoothie cleanse further than the stipulated ten days, let’s recall the changes that should be made when the cleanse is over:

Instead of the three smoothie meals daily, replace breakfast and lunch or even breakfast alone instead.

And eat healthy whole foods meals for the rest of the day.

Compared to the strict 3-meal smoothie replacements, incorporation of healthy whole foods is a lot more effective, and you can easily adopt that lifestyle for the rest of your life.

But here’s something worth mentioning; you will need a full-sized blender for all the ingredients of a recipe to fill in the blender’s pitcher. 

Think Blendtec or Vitamix, these two brands of blenders hold 72 ounces of liquid easily.

But, if you have a smaller blender like a Nutribullet or any other, you will have to divide the ingredients into two or three parts to avoid spillovers.

The small blenders hold about 32ounces of liquid.

Note: This formula yields about 72 ounces of smoothies which make three servings enough for your entire days’ worth of smoothies.

Let’s dive into the criteria of the perfect cleansing detox smoothie:

  • Green leafy vegetables

Leafy greens like:

Not only because it helps with detoxification, but because other liquids like coconut water or almond milk have extra calories, and they will slow down or reverse the detoxification process.

  • Lemons and ginger

It’s not just because they add flavor to the smoothies…

Lemons and ginger also hold incredible detoxifying power and will enhance the function of the smoothies.

That’s why you have to make sure you add these ingredients if you want to take your smoothie detoxification effectiveness to the next level.

  • Flaxseeds and protein powder

How to turn a smoothie into a meal replacement?

You have to add healthy ingredients that are capable of keeping you full for longer.

Flaxseeds are just perfect for that.

And they are nutrient-rich, increasing the effectiveness of the smoothies.

Also a scoop of protein will keep you fuller for longer and rev up your metabolism, but this isn’t mandatory to add.

This is the thorough and firm brushing of the skin before you shower – nothing rough though.

Brushing improves blood circulation and lymphatic drainage enhancing the discharge of metabolic wastes and toxins.

And foot pads/foot baths present a natural option for detoxifying the body.
